Ways to Make Your Furniture Look Like New

Making old furniture look new, even modern, isn’t as hard as it seems. If you have furniture that needs an update, whether it’s a tired family heirloom or an old-fashioned piece you picked up at a garage sale, consider these clever hacks to make it look new again.

Furniture Makeover 101

Before refurbishing an old piece of furniture, think about how it relates to other pieces in the room. Once you determine its place in your desired aesthetic, you’ll have a better idea of how to change the color of its finish. If you want a dresser to be the focal point of the room, for example, refinish it in a bright color to let it stand out from its muted counterparts. Conversely, refinish your old furniture in a common, tame color if you want it to blend in with other pieces in the room.

The same goes for reupholstering an old sofa or chair. If your couch is made with good bones and just needs fresh fabric, find one that complements your color scheme. We recommend using only two or three colors to complete your palette, making sure not to “busy” the room with too many distracting shades. Of course, if you’d like your sofa to steal the show, dress it up in a bright fabric you and your guests can’t help but notice. Be intentional with your color choices to highlight or hide your sofa, depending on your preference.

After you’ve decided on a color, add some fun finishing touches. Textiles like throw pillows, blankets, and rugs can add modern flair to an older piece of furniture. On the other hand, it might also be a good idea to add some vintage decorative items to match the antiques, creating a cohesive theme.
